Laryngitis, Pharyngitis. Beware of Respiratory Infections! – In Colombia, we are experiencing a peak in respiratory infections caused by infections with viruses such as influenza, respiratory syncytial virus, and rhinovirus, among others. Contagion with these agents can cause acute respiratory infections (ARI) such as the flu or colds, or also some more serious ones such as pneumonia or bronchitis.
This entire epidemiological peak may cause the current winter wave in the country. From the National Institute of Health, it remains expected that these infections could last until August. So far this year, consultations and medical care have increased by up to 62% for diseases of this type compared to 2021
According to the director of surveillance of the National Institute of Health, the containment of COVID could have led to a significant reduction in this type of infection in 2020 and 2021. Still, with changes in biosafety protocols, people stopped wearing masks and taking care of themselves. As a result, added to the winter wave helped the spread of these viruses to be much greater than in previous years.

WHAT ARE RESPIRATORY INFECTIONS
There are different types of infections, those that affect the upper respiratory tract (nose and throat) and those that infect the lower respiratory tract (lungs). Those that affect the upper part are usually viral, and those that affect the lower leg are generally viral and bacterial.
These infections are the most frequent in the world due to their easy contagion and are the most joint cause of mortality and disability. In our country, acute respiratory infections (ARI) are the fifth leading cause of mortality in the adult population and one of the three leading causes in children under five.
After respiratory infections come respiratory diseases, which are pathologies that affect the lungs or airways in the long term, they can be mild or chronic. These include allergic rhinitis, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or pulmonary hypertension.
TYPES OF RESPIRATORY INFECTIONS
Common Cold: – Laryngitis Pharyngitis
The flu is commonly caused by more than 200 different viruses, such as parainfluenza, respiratory syncytial virus, adenoviruses, coronaviruses, and rhinoviruses. These act by invading the epithelial cells of the respiratory mucosa. There is usually a runny nose, sneezing, sore throat, and sometimes a headache.
It is not usually a complicated infection, but sinusitis or otitis may occur. Symptoms typically last for two weeks maximum. If they persist beyond this time, a doctor should stand consult
LARYNGITIS: – Laryngitis Pharyngitis
It occurs when the infection, caused by viruses, reaches the larynx and inflames it. The main symptom of laryngitis is when the voice becomes hoarse or deep. Sometimes the person must speak in a very soft tone, force others to speak, and may even lose their voice due to this infection.
Other symptoms can be sore throat, discomfort or difficulty swallowing food, cough, and sometimes fever. The best way to treat the infection is to rest the throat, drink water constantly, inhale steam, and treat the cough with remedies according to medical advice.
SINUSITIS – Laryngitis Pharyngitis
It refers to the infection of the paranasal sinuses. Usually, they come after the flu or when rhinitis is complicated. These cavities are located around the cheeks, behind the forehead, on the sides of the nose, and under the eyes. It usually occurs by virus; in the case of bacterial infection, it can be complex.
The main symptom is a runny nose, headache, cough, discomfort to the touch, and sometimes fever. It does not usually last more than seven days. However, if the symptoms stay prolonged beyond this time, a doctor should check.
Pharyngitis
Inflammation stands triggered by bacteria, viruses, and fungi that lodge in the tissue at the height of the pharynx and invade the area. It can also occur due to smoking. It usually occurs after a cold or other respiratory infection. Streptococcus pyogenes is the bacterial agent most associated with acute pharyngitis and tonsillitis.
Some of the most common symptoms are severe sore throat, difficulty swallowing food and drinks, discomfort or difficulty speaking, ear pain, tenderness in the lymph nodes in the neck and discomfort to the touch, and red and swollen tonsils.
